Sydney Marple was born in  on July 8, 1890. Sydney was a locomotive engineer without militia experience before he joined the 52nd Bn as a private at Port Arthur on May 6, 1915. Sydney Marple was commissioned from the ranks and obtained the rank of Lieutenant.
